Plant Map 3D is an innovative tool that helps farmers better understand how cover crops influence nitrogen availability and crop nutrient needs.

Available through a Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) project in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, Plant Map 3D uses advanced imaging technology to create field-specific recommendations that support more precise nitrogen management decisions.

How Plant Map 3D Works

After a multispecies cover crop is established, participating agribusiness partners use specialized camera systems mounted on field equipment to capture high-resolution images of the cover crop stand.

The technology analyzes:

  • Cover crop biomass
  • Species composition
  • Field variability

This information is then used to generate detailed maps showing how cover crops may affect nitrogen availability across the field.

What Farmers Receive

Participating farmers may receive:

  • Cost-share support for Plant Map 3D imaging services
  • Variable-rate sidedress nitrogen recommendations
  • Cover crop nitrogen credit estimates
  • Data-driven insights for improving nitrogen management
  • Opportunities to reduce unnecessary nitrogen applications

The program can help identify areas where less nitrogen may be needed while maintaining crop performance.

Eligibility Requirements

To participate, farms must:

  • Be located within the Chesapeake Bay watershed project area
  • Meet Farm Bill program eligibility requirements
  • Have an established multispecies cover crop to be terminated in spring 2026
  • Have a current Nutrient Management Plan for enrolled acres

Potential Benefits

Farmers may benefit through:

  • Reduced nitrogen input costs
  • Improved nutrient use efficiency
  • More precise variable-rate nitrogen applications
  • Better understanding of cover crop nutrient contributions
  • Increased profitability opportunities

For participating farms, the program also includes methods for comparing Plant Map 3D recommendations with baseline nitrogen management practices.

Participating Agribusiness Partners

Farmers may work with:

  • GROWMARK FS
  • Willard Agri-Service

These partners help collect field imagery and implement variable-rate nitrogen recommendations.
